With tears streaming down my face, coincidentally just having read your book to my almost tween, to have found your words here. My parenting world has changed immensely when I stopped listening to other colonizers (milestones, crappy books about sleep training and “being polite”, using the words “bad”or “good” to describe a child who needs to fly and not be caged…). I felt in my heart and soul these were all the wrong things, so I looked to the Indigenous around the world and their traditions to guide me. Decolonization takes time, but he is well on his way to continue hugging trees, saving bees (I showed him a sugar water solution last summer), watching out for ant hills, thanking the sea for food and play. Although my grandparents came here from Sicily and I am a settler here, we will make sure we protect the people and land that were here before us. So excited for all that is growing in your garden Jenan. You’re a wonderful person and mother, Thank you for all the gifts you have given us all. 🌷🩷🐰🍉🥚🪺🇵🇸
Wow. This is the best and only meaningful Mother's Day post I've read or seen today. Such a contrast with the opportunist Mother's Day messages we receive from some politicians who would have you think that motherhood only matters to those living in empire. Thank you Jenan.
